More Flexibility?

http://www.startribune.com/local/blogs/250189171.html There is a proposal that is trying to reduce the regulation in the classroom. This idea would mean that as long as your class met the standards, there would not be as many constraints in how you reach those standards. There are also other ideas about having a certain number of days where students […]

Standards Idea

Kindergarten science standards can be tricky for teachers to address. Here is a standard that Ms. Depuydt addresses in her class. She has the students help her plant, and they grow them in the back of the room. They frequently check to see how they are doing, the changes they have made, etc. She has […]

Shout out

Michael and I went into kindergarten today at the end of the day to meet with Mrs. Sizer about our full week practicum ideas, and Carly was teaching today (because of her softball conflict for next week) and Mrs. Sizer told us what a good job she did today avoiding prompted questions starting with “Can […]

Key Idea For The Week!

I think to summarize this week (even though it was a short one) it’s safe to do it in one word: preperation. As kindergarten practicum approaches, I can tell we are all doing a lot of work to prep in order to ensure that our kindergarteners are going to have engaging and exciting activities next […]

Peaceful conflict resolution

It’s important to convey to children the negative consequences from violence, and the positive outcomes of peaceful conflict resolution. The comic books are a great way for students to […]

Gardening teaches kids math, science, and healthy eating! Cool Article!

http://www.oregonlive.com/hg/index.ssf/2014/03/thumbs_up_for_green-thumb_scho.html  This is a really cool article about elementary school kids growing a garden, and how their teachers use it as an interdisciplinary unit. The teachers incorporate math, science, and health lessons, all related to their garden! They are able to practice these subjects as a way to learn about them on a deeper level.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – Gustavus Event

On Monday night, the author of several well-known books and TED talk speaker came to Gustavus to speak about performing gender roles and about feminist issues in general. Before Chimamanda Adichie came to campus, I had watched her other TED talk video about how we should all be feminists. A link to the talk is […]

Mindfulness

Would you want to  incorporate a mindfulness curriculum into your classroom? Why or why not? Do you think that all grades would benefit from it?
