Recess Posted on March 4th, 2014 by

I know this is not always a topic that is discussed in the classroom, but I am wondering what everyone feels about Recess and at what age should students no longer get to go out to Recess before or after lunch?

I agree with everything that has already been said. I also think that recess should not only be connected to lunch time. I always felt rushed as it was to eat a decent lunch without having to worry about giving myself enough time to be outside. By having the two combined, I have found that students would rather skip eating lunch and be outside for longer. If we want to promote a healthy lifestyle and nutritious eating, then we need to give students enough time for both.

I remember loving recess and feeling so refreshed coming back into the classroom after recess, so I would hate to deprive my students of that!! I think that recess should always be fit into the schedule, every day, especially because days of gym per week is being reduced in many districts.

I think it’s good to give elementary students the opportunity to unwind each day. They will focus better if they can get rid of some of their energy! I think it might be a hassle to fit in, but definitely worth it. I also agree with Ellie that High School students should still be given time to unwind. Everyone needs some time to just take a breath and relax. Even if only for 5-15 minutes.

I think students should be given the options to take a recess or a simple study break throughout high-school. Recess is a physical and mental outlet for children and when students are allowed to take recess they will most likely be more engaged and eager to learn during instructions periods.
