In The News… Posted on October 22nd, 2013 by

I absolutely hate to write that something of this magnitude is yet again a news story. As I’m sure many of you have heard, there was a shooting at a Nevada middle school on Monday morning. While not much has been released about the incident, this news story showcases that students assume it was because this child was bullied.

Bullying is an epidemic in our country. It is a force that educators, parents, and administrators alike are having a major problem controlling. In my opinion, one of the issues is that we are trying to solve the problem as adults who have been through it, rather than as young students experiencing it.

What worries me more is that we may have another epidemic on our hands: the use of weapons (school shootings, suicides, etc.) as a response to bullying. While we need to solve the issue of bullying, I believe that we also need to stop this response to bullying. How to do so, is the tough question.
