Geography in Schools Posted on October 17th, 2012 by

A few weeks ago we talked about geography in schools today. On bad example of Americans grasp on geography is Miss Teen USA from 2007. In the video she talks about how people don’t know to use maps when she probably doesn’t know how to use one.

Wow…I just watched this for the first time and I was laughing histerically. Why did she turn students not being able to locate the United States on a map into us needing to help South Africa and the Middle East? In response to Mariah’s comment, I still don’t think your lack of learning is your fault. I think that it is a difficult job for teachers to engage students, but it is ultimately thier jobs. I personally loved social studies, and in particular, geography because I had fabulous teachers throughout middle school and high school that did an incredible job of making the subjects relate to our lives and be extremely interesting to us.

You know those students who don’t pay attention in class because they just don’t care about the subject? That was me in every social studies class that I took (please don’t hold that against me). I could have paid attention and learned something, but chose not to most of the time. Now that I look back on the actual experience, I recall that a variety of techniques were used to make the subject more engaging. No matter how much the teacher tried, I didn’t have any of it. At what point is my lack of learning my fault and not solely my teacher’s?

Either way, if she doesn’t know how to use maps or people in general don’t know to use maps today, teachers/school districts are failing in regards to teaching their students geography.
